Unexpected Creative Pleasures?

As some of you will know, I started learning Salsa a few months back and it's become a major source of happiness in my life.

I'm at the point now where my dance partner Jane and I know enough moves that we can do variations and start to get creative with it, rather than just doing the set routines we've learnt in class.

It's such an unexpected pleasure and I'm so glad I decided to try it.

A friend of mine who dances talks about it as being her meditation. I definitely agree when you're in the flow dancing with a great dance partner you can get completely lost in it and forget the rest of the outside world.

What unexpected creative pleasures have you stumbled upon in your life? Something different to what you regularly do, that you tried and found it brought you a lot of enjoyment you didn't really expect?

I'd be great to hear your experiences, just click on the comments link below to share yours...

Hi everyone,

The best thing I´ve done for my creativity lately was to start an art journal.

I always had a harsh, inner critic and found it hard to let loose and experiment on those sheets of expensive, high-quality artist´s paper - I always felt that I should only use them for "serous" and artsy drawings. As a result I only did what felt safe, and got utterly bored and uninspired in the end.

But a blank journal that fits in your hand bag is much easier to get comfortable with. It has really made things flow for me, and my drawings now evolve in unexpected and fun ways. It all builds creative confidence and will serve as inspiration for future art work, I am sure.

A side benefit has been to discover that I actually like to write, too. Drawing makes my thoughts flow freely, and sometimes it´s just nice to write them down, make them part of the drawing.

The whole process is just very enjoyable and relaxing, and helps sort out my thoughts after a day at work.

I second what Heidi has written. Jotting and sketching thoughts and ideas in a journal has brought me unexpected joy and inspiration. Its amazing how these sketches have evolved into something totally different to my usual style. Its becoming a habit and the moment I open the book and begin "playing" ideas flow freely.
